Frequently Asked Questions
What is DAS?
The Davis Accounting Society (DAS) is a business organization on campus that focuses on accounting and strives to give members the resources and skills to be successful in the business world.
At DAS, our goal is to help you be successful as you enter the professional world! We host several workshops each quarter that are geared toward improving your professional skills such as networking, resume and cover letter writing, and interviews. These are skills that will be useful in any career that you pursue. We will give you information about the accounting profession and as well as help you in the process of meeting the requirements of obtaining your CPA license.
We also have guest speakers from different firms come to our meetings to speak to you about different aspects of accounting as well as give you first-hand knowledge about working in the industry. Our guest speaker events are a great opportunity to get advice from people with years of accounting experience.
In addition to providing a space for you to meet professionals, joining DAS is also a great way to meet like-minded students. We host socials every quarter to help you foster both professional and personal connections.
What is Accounting?
It’s more than doing taxes and performing audits - accounting is the language of the business. Every company relies on accountants to organize their finances and inform strategic decision-making. As an accountant, you could work for an accounting firm, a private corporation, the government, or a non-profit entity.
How do I become a member?
In order to become a member of DAS you must fill out a membership form, attend 4 out of 6 meetings (info session doesn't count as a meeting), and 2 out of 3 socials.
Who can I expect coming to DAS events?
Besides other students interested in accounting, you can expect to connect with the business professionals you actually want to network with (this includes recruiters!). In the past we have had some of the Big Four present as well as small regional firms and government entities.
Can I still join even if I’m not an Economics major?
Yes! We are open to all majors. As always, there is no application or membership fee. Even if you are the slightest bit interested in accounting or trying to explore possible careers, DAS will provide you with the resources and knowledge to help you find a suitable career.
What is the CPA?
To become a Certified Public Accountant, you must take the CPA exam. The CPA exam is comprised of four parts, Auditing (AUD), Business Environment (BEC), Financial Accounting (FAR), and Regulation (REG). You are given 4 hours to complete each section and 18 months to complete all four sections.
Do I need to get a CPA if I’m interested in Accounting?
No, you do not need a CPA if you are interested in going into accounting. However, CPAs do make more in terms of salary than accountants without.
